The American dream of personal riches permeated every segment of the population. It was a time when the mark of personal success depended on how much one made or how much he was worth. This materialistic impetus was reflected in the voting patterns. In 1920 only 19 per cent of Detroit's workers voted Democratic; by 1928, a year when the ten largest cities in the country went Democratic for the first time, the figure was 37 per cent.
