14. All of the arts represent aspects of the world and human life, and part of our pleasure in these arts arises from the representational methods. Thus Aristotle made mimesis his essential idea for a poetics of literary arts. The idea of representation remains essential in the arts, even in modern times, with the disruption and reformulation of the representational codes and traditions in the arts. In turn, scholarship in the arts represents the artists and their works in biographies, critical studies, and histories.

We build arguments based upon par- a n i n t r o d u c t i o n o n f i v e t h e m e s tial and circumstantial analysis. Yet even in these cases we can usually eliminate many inadequate and false possibilities; though certainty may be elusive, we are quite capable of identifying the remaining elements and definitive aspects of events, actions, situations, and conditions by a process of elimination as well as construction. In this sense historical inquiry is both an art and a science in the handling of documents and evidence.

Take your pick, for we insist that the essays can and should be read in whatever order appeals to each reader. Within each of the five categories, the order of the three essays is basically arbitrary. Although the essays are separated into five topical categories, we remind readers that each takes up not only its declared topic but aspects of the other four ideas. Consequently, the full significance of each of the five ideas extends throughout the fifteen essays.
