In Alfred Hitchcock’s To capture a Thief , a seashore lodge was once the atmosphere for thievery and intrigue. Cf. below p. 117. 37. Cf. Döring 1907, Billings 1920: 47–52, G. 209–210; Görgemanns’ (1960) theory of an exoteric protreptic purpose of the Lg. does not contradict this view, nor do the occasional indications of a deliberate arrangement of the material (cf. Taylor 466, Friedländer III2 362–381, 508 n. 37, 509 n. 46). 38. 40–41, doubted by Dodds 1959: 16 n. 1. 39. The Anytus episode 89e–95a looks like a later insertion; cf. And Phd. (see especially Fox 1956) are clearly irrelevant to chronology. I have put Cri. before Ap. —According to my view (cf. below p. 18) early versions of later dialogues such as Lysis may also have originated in this period. 49. Mx. 244b–246a refers to the Corinthian war which ended in 386 BCE. In Ep. 324a Plato says that he was ĝġďĎƱė ŕĞđ ĞďĞĞċěĆĻęėĞċ when he went to Sicily for the first time, and he was probably born in 427. But ĝġďĎĦė means “approximately,” as it does two lines before. Is it possible that Plato should have risked such a voyage before the war was over?
