These early religious houses spread like wildfire, appearing on the outskirts of Egyptian towns and villages and in various isolated locations during the 4th century. They were probably unplanned settlements with wells, an area for cultivation and simple structures containing a single room or cell for the monks, all within a walled enclosure. Mealtimes and services may have been the only occasions on which the members of the community had contact, and it is recorded that even here they did their utmost to ignore one another and preserve their ascetic lifestyle.

One was the tonsure, the haircut of a monk, which under the Roman rules was just shaved on top but in the Celtic form had the front section of the remaining ring of hair removed as well. The principal problem, though, was over the date of Easter, which despite warnings from Rome, the Irish and Northumbrian church continued to calculate from a different point. The Synod of Whitby in AD 664 was arranged to resolve the issue, with the Roman method being ruled correct, although it was still not adopted by some monasteries for more than fifty years.

This developed into dramatic sinuous (curvilinear) patterns marking the Decorated style, which dominated ecclesiastical architecture in the early 14th century. These could make stunning additions to existing churches and principal abbey buildings and often replaced earlier simple openings (hence be cautious in dating a building purely from the style of windows, as they may be later insertions). Norman builders relied on the sheer mass of the walls to counteract the force of the pitched roof as it tried to push the sides of the structure outwards.
